RV Market Learning – Understanding “Show Specials”

As we enter into the traditional RV show season, we know some people might be thinking that means discounts! Here’s what to look out for if you are considering purchasing at an RV show. Bowlus purposely doesn’t engage in RV shows due to their false promises of “discounts” and generally downscale marketing tactics.

Real Discounts vs. Hype
While the discounts offered at RV shows may be real, it’s important to recognize that some of the “specials” may not be as “exclusive” or as “special” as they seem. Dealers are known to inflate the original prices before offering a “discount,” so it’s wise to research the MSRP and typical selling prices beforehand. Did you know that most RV manufacturers inflate MSRP by over 100% so they can offer a discount. We think RV buyers are smarter than that but these poor habits remain.

High-Pressure Sales Tactics
The urgency created by RV shows can sometimes be a sales tactic to push buyers into making quick decisions without thoroughly considering all options. Never feel pressured to make an immediate decision, instead make sure your purchase is the best one for you. Take your time to evaluate whether the deal truly meets your needs and budget.

Quality and Condition
While many RVs at shows are new models, dealers often use the event to move older stock or units that have been on the lot for a while. Inspect the RV thoroughly and ask about its history, especially if it’s being offered at a steep discount. Ensure it’s in new condition and not a demo model or last year’s stock unless you’re okay with that.

Financing Terms
Special financing deals can be a great way to save money, but it’s important to read the fine print. Some zero-interest loans may have conditions or higher payments after the promotional period ends. Carefully review all financing offers and understand the long-term implications. It’s often beneficial to compare these offers with those you could get from your bank or credit union.

Add-Ons and F&I
Bundle deals and add-ons can be valuable, but sometimes they are included to make a deal seem more attractive without actually providing much value. Assess whether you truly need the bundled items at all or if you could purchase them separately for less money.

RV show specials can sometimes offer genuine savings and benefits, but it’s important to approach them with a well-informed perspective with a knowledgeable salesperson who can provide you with all the information you need. If you want a deal and are comparing standard RVs to standard RVs looking for the best promotion, a show might be for you. If you are looking for a performance RV or one truly in the luxury space, a mass RV show experience is probably not the place to find it.
