Why Would You Want a Lighter RV?

With a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of just 4,000 pounds for the Bowlus Volterra and Terra Firma models and 3,500 pounds for the Rivet, Bowlus are downright lightweight when compared to other travel trailers of comparable length. Why do we design our luxury RVs to be so light? Because we know that lightweight travel trailers are easier and safer to handle both on the road and at your campsite. Here’s how.

Lightweight RVs give you more options when it comes to your tow vehicle. Many luxury crossovers and SUVs can easily tow a Bowlus, as can many hybrid and electric SUVs. You’ll need a larger tow vehicle to pull a heavier trailer. However pickup trucks come with their own unique set of challenges. Larger vehicles can be harder to park in small campsites, the overall length of your tow vehicle and trailer may size you out of many campgrounds, and is probably not as enjoyable as your daily driver.

Compared to towing a heavier RV, you’ll also find that the performance of your tow vehicle will be better after hitching up with a Bowlus. You’ll have better fuel economy or range because your vehicle’s engine won’t be as taxed when accelerating at highway speeds or taking on a mountain range. Plus, towing a lighter RV minimizes the overall wear and tear on your tow vehicle.

A lighter RV means you’ll experience smoother and faster stopping. Simply put, the heavier the vehicle, the longer it takes to stop. The ability to stop quickly in an emergency is paramount to the safety of you, your passengers, and others. If you’re traveling at 45 miles per hour through a national park and you need to stop quickly to avoid a moose, bear, or other wildlife on the road, every foot you don’t have to travel before stopping counts.

Finally, a lightweight camper is easier to maneuver than a heavier RV. For example, the Bowlus’ low hitch weight and center of gravity make it extraordinarily easy to move and handle. Even a small adult can quickly reposition a Bowlus on a flat surface. Check out our tour video to see how easily it’s done!
